PART B_2

Curling is called “chess on ice” because of the strategies it requires to play the sport. There are two methods used in curling: the offensive and the defensive. It is important for teams to not only try to place the stones closest to the center of the house but also to prevent the other team from doing so.

If a team loses their last-stone advantage, also called a hammer, it would be easier for them to score points. The team with the hammer should position its stones around the center of the house so that they could place the last stone closer to the center of the house.
Players usually use various strategies that worked out beforehand. Also, they adapt to strategies used by the other team or depending on the actual situation of the game.
Before starting a game, water is sprinkled on the ice sheet to freeze it and make the surface rougher. That is why players do the sweeping to smoothen the ice. This is another important factor to help a team win. The goal of sweeping is to change the friction of the ice which will change the path of the stone.
Some people might think that curling is not as interesting or as challenging as any other sports. However, once they have tried it, they would see how much physical and mental strength players need to be able to play the sport.

Curling, also known as “chess on ice,” is a popular sport that came from Scotland. Then, it spread to other parts of Europe and North America in the 1800s. It became popular in many countries because of the strategy and skill it requires to play the sport. In 1998, it became an official sport in the Winter Olympics.
The sport requires that players must have both physical strength and mental skills to plan their moves. The game takes place on a sheet of ice that is about 45 meters in length and 5 meters in width. The stone and the broom are the main equipment for this sport.
There are two teams in every curling game which has four players each. The goal of each team is to score the most points for them to win the game. Each player on each team slides two stones each. The “skip” instructs one player to release stones. Meanwhile, the two other players sweep the ice in front of the stone. The team that has the most stones near the center of the house wins.

Building robots
Ishiguro Hiroshi believes that there are two steps in creating robots that look like real humans. The first step is by capturing the typical characteristics of humans such as their expressions and body movements. The second step is by having a remote-control machine that would transfer human speech and movements to the robot.
Ishiguro sometimes sends his Geminoid HI to conferences abroad alone. He usually stays in Japan and controls it by using his computer. When it speaks, listeners feel as if he is really there. He has been working hard to build android robots to discover what it means to be human. It has also taught him interesting things such as how human brains work. For instance, the operator feels whenever someone touches the android.
Meanwhile, there are many other teams that have been creating robots such as the team from Osaka University. They have created a robot that reacts to different kinds of touch. For example, it quickly moves out of the way the second it feels that someone is about to slap it. Another person who builds a robot is Takahashi Tomotaka. He built a robot named Kirobo that was sent into space as a conversation partner for an astronaut. The robot had the ability to listen and answer questions.

In the past years, the number of people who have been traveling has been increasing. Because of that, the government, along with some experts, has been promoting ecotourism, which is also known as responsible traveling.
Ecotourism adopts practices that are more environment-friendly, protects the natural and cultural sites, and supports local communities. It aims to develop tourist attractions that benefit not only travelers but also the local people and the environment. In this way, they can ensure the development and sustainability of tourism in the long run.
Naturalists came up with a guide that would help travelers understand the importance of the environment and how people could contribute to protecting it. This guide opened up the minds of many tourists to be more careful about their actions. In addition to that, ecotourism provides job opportunities for local people. Also, it ensures that indigenous groups remain on their ancestral land to help them preserve their culture.

Real estate’s status in Japan
Property prices in Tokyo are being pushed to raise the bar because of labor shortage, high resource costs, and a sudden increase in easy-earned money. According to Real Estate Economic Institute, the prices for new condos in the greater Tokyo area averaged at around 2.87 million yen per 3.3 sq. meters. In the late 1980s, property prices increased during Japan’s asset bubble. It was the time when some condos are being sold for almost 1 billion yen. In 1990, the average price peaked at around 3.08 million yen before Japan’s asset bubble collapsed. After that, the prices decreased by half. However, low-interest rates and housing loans improved the demand for new condos. The collapse of the bubble would start the long period of slow wage growth and weakness in supply and demand.
The labor shortage in Japan is driving up personnel costs in construction companies. They also had to deal with the raw materials’ high costs. One of the reasons for pushing up the prices is the strong competition for land for construction purposes.
Furthermore, since 2013, the Bank of Japan has maintained a policy that enabled people to earn money easier. According to a chief economist, a lot of financing is flowing into real estate nowadays which will continue until 2021 and will be difficult for Bank of Japan to tighten its policy as the growth of global economy slows down.
Based on the financial report, the financial risk of real estate is still at the safe range, but it is getting closer to the range with higher financial risk. Nowadays, it is still being monitored to look for warning signs in real estate’s status.

Space exploration
Hayabusa was lost in space that is why the team continuously sent messages in the hope that they will answer despite the fact that there was no spacecraft in history that was able to communicate again after a long blackout. Finally, after 43 days, Hayabusa was able to communicate with the team again. However, the window of opportunity for re-entry had already passed. So, they had to stay in space for another three years.
Hayabusa experienced another problem, all of its four engines stopped. This made their trip back to earth impossible. Fortunately, they were somehow able to fix the engines which made Hayabusa start working again. Meanwhile, when they were finally close to the Earth, Hayabusa was badly damaged. On June 13, 2010, the capsule with its soil samples landed safely in the Australian desert.
Although Kawaguchi admits that the project had many risks and the success was a result of luck, he still believes that this was the “New Age of Exploration” into space in search of new knowledge and resources.

Curling is a popular sport that began from Scotland in the 1500s. It spread in other parts of Europe and North America in the 1800s and has become a popular sport worldwide.

In this sport, players should not only have physical strength but also have a good strategy to plan their moves in defeating their opponents. Because of that, many people have called the sport “chess on ice” and has become an official sport in the Winter Olympics.
Curling is played on a sheet of ice that is about 45 meters in length and 5 meters in width. At the end of each sheet is the target, also known as “house” that has three concentric rings. The stone and the broom are the main equipment of the game. The stone weighs between 17 and 20 kilograms, while the broom has a long handle that is used to sweep the ice in front of the stone.
There are four players on each team that slides the stone over the ice. Each player on each team slides two stones each, a total of 16 stones, which is called an “end.” One player must release the stone upon the instructions of the other player which is called the “skip”, while the other two players must sweep the ice in front of the stone. To score points, players try to place as many stones as they can to the center of the house. The team that gets the most points wins.
