PART B_2

Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who was born into a Jewish family. His family was originally from Leipzig and then moved to Vienna where he got his education.
Freud started studying medicine in 1873 at the University of Vienna. He worked at the Vienna General Hospital after he graduated. He treated people with hysteria with Josef Breuer. Freud went to Paris in 1885 to study neurology. He returned to Vienna a year after and opened up a private clinic that specialized in nervous and brain disorders.
Freud developed a theory wherein it shows that humans have an unconscious part in their minds in which aggressive behaviors are in conflict with reality. In 1990, he published “The Interpretation of Dreams” wherein it tackles his analysis of dreams in terms of unconscious desires and experiences.
From 1902 to 1938, he held the position as the Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Vienna. However, the medical institution did not agree with most of his theories. Still, he was able to gain followers through a group of students.
After World War One, he decided to concentrate on the application of his theory to art, literature, and anthropology as he spent less time in clinical observations.

Inherited diseases
A genetic disorder is a disease that is often caused by an abnormality in the genes of an individual. It is typically inherited from parents, while some people acquired them from the changes in genes that have already been existing. Some of the most common genetic diseases are heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.
Inherited diseases could be passed down in two different manners; the dominant or recessive way. Every individual has two copies of each gene on 22 numbered chromosomes. Females have two copies of all the genes on the X chromosomes. Meanwhile, males only have one copy of both X and Y chromosomes.
A dominant disease usually occurs when there are DNA mistakes in only one of the two gene copies. This means that a change in the DNA of a parent would most likely cause the disease to be passed on the child by a 50-50 chance. On the other hand, a recessive disease means that there are mistakes in both copies of the gene. This means that both parents carry at least one copy of the changes in the specific gene which usually affects their child.
There is a 25 percent chance that a child may inherit both parents’ changed genes copies if both parents have one changed copy each. This often causes a child to have a disorder. Moreover, if only one of the parents has a changed gene copy, it does not often show any signs of disorder on their children. On top of that, some genetic disorders have inconsistencies in whether a person would develop symptoms and their severity.

The world-famous cartoon
Over 60 years ago, a cartoonist named Charles M. Schulz created the first Peanuts cartoon. Even after his death in 2000, the Peanuts continue to be published and discovered by new readers. The Peanuts cartoon characters have millions of fans around the world since the first time they appeared in several publications. A lot of people find the main characters of the cartoon very interesting. Charlie Brown, who is known as the little “loser,” is the boy who always believes that he can win. Another character named Lucy is the girl who always gives advice to people. The character who always brings his security blanket with him is a little boy named Linus. But the most famous of them all is Snoopy, a beagle who thinks he is a great writer or a fighter pilot. They have captured the hearts of many readers for almost half a century now.
One of the stories in the Peanuts cartoons is about Father’s Day which makes readers realize that a father’s love can be shown in many simple ways. Many episodes of the Peanuts cartoon focus on family life. The cartoonist got the inspiration to create stories from the people and incidents during his childhood. That may be the reason for the cartoons’ popularity among readers around the world.

High-income economy
Singapore is an island city-state located in southern Malaysia which is ranked as one of the world’s most competitive economies. However, 50 years ago, the country was a low-income economy that faced severe unemployment, poor buildings, and a housing shortage. Still, it was able to rapidly develop into a high-income economy after independence. The country has a gross national income of $52,530 per capita as of the year 2017, one of the highest in the world.
The main reason for their economic growth was the manufacturing industry. Singapore reached full employment and was ranked the same as Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan in the early days of the 1970s. The manufacturing and services industry has remained to be the main factor of the country’s high value-added economy.
In 2018, the overall growth of the county’s economy was 3.2%. The electronics and precision engineering sectors are still the main keys to economic growth. Meanwhile, the services sector also grew 6% each year, particularly the information and communication sector. In addition to that, the finance and insurance industries also grew by 5.9% year-on-year.
The World Bank Human Capital Index ranks Singapore as the best country in the world in human capital development. This means that children born today and over the next few years in Singapore would be 88% productive when they grow up provided that they will be given the right to proper education and health benefits.

I will give a presentation about environmental problems in the Philippines.
(Please read aloud the passage below.)

PART B_2

In the Philippines, people are experiencing various environmental problems which are usually caused by human activities. The most common environmental problems are air and water pollution. However, the worst environmental problem in the Philippines these days is water pollution.
Water pollution is a serious environmental problem in the Philippines because it causes people and animals to get diseases from the water they drink or use. Also, in most parts of the Philippines, there is not enough clean water for everyone to use. Most rivers, lakes, and springs in the Philippines that used to have clean and safe water to drink, are already polluted because of the activities of people who live near them. These people usually throw their trash in these bodies of water without even thinking of what could happen in the future. One of the main reasons for this activity is the poor management of trash in some parts of the Philippines.
Nowadays, the government has been organizing programs to help solve the water pollution problem in the Philippines. Many pro-environment organizations are doing clean-up programs to encourage people to clean the polluted bodies of water. Most people in the Philippines are already managing their trash and they avoid just throwing them anywhere. Many people in the Philippines hope that water pollution will be solved so that it will not be experienced by future generations.

The food crisis in the world
The food crisis is one of the many problems countries have been struggling with over the years. This is more common in African and Asian countries. Climate change has been one of the main causes of the threat to food security as it affects the natural production of food and the likes.
A food shortage is not just about not having enough food but it also creates other serious problems. People who already do not have easy access to food production are most likely to be affected by this. It also affects the livelihood of many people. As a result, they are forced to move into another place in hopes that it could give them more opportunities in life.
According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 820 million people who have been experiencing hunger for the past years. This has put the development of many countries on hold. Because of that, the government and some non-profit organizations have been working together to achieve the Zero Hunger by 2030. However, they know that this would be a tough journey as hunger is still on the rise in many African countries. It has also been slowly increasing in Latin America and the Caribbean. Meanwhile, it has been continuously rising in Western Asia which is now more than 12% of its population are undernourished. They aim to put an end to this crisis by promoting sustainable agriculture, supporting small-time farmers, and by providing equal access to lands.

PART B_2

Part-time job for students
Nowadays, many students depend on student loans to send themselves to school. These students usually do not get financial support from their families due to some reasons.
Although most students are being discouraged by their teachers to have a part-time job, some of them do not have a choice because their loans do not cover their apartment rents and other fees. So, they need to work to have a roof over their heads and food on their plates.
Because of that, Hannah Brown from Manchester University offers advice to students who want to have a part-time job. She said that it is important for students to be careful when they look for a part-time job as it might significantly affect their academic responsibilities. So, they advise their students not to commit to work that requires 20 hours of their time per week.
In addition to that, seeking out career-relevant work might also come in handy in the future. Students who have a part-time job that is relevant to their major could have a great chance to improve their employability after they graduate.
Above all else, health should be the students’ priority. It is important to keep their body healthy so they could have enough strength to study so they could reach their goals in life.

PART B_2

Literature is one of the subjects students study at school. However, not all students see the value of learning such a subject. On the other hand, there are a lot of things students might benefit from studying literature if they give it a chance.
In literature, students read various literary texts such as prose, poetry, and drama which varies from classic to modern texts. According to Judith Langer, a university professor, literature makes people better thinkers. It helps them see every side of situations to see things on their own visions and move them towards dreams they might not have ever imagined.
In addition to that, students gain the ability to understand and imagine what it is like to be in someone else’s shoes. They become more understanding of other cultures and the likes. Also, students develop a sense of individuality and creativity. Through studying literature, students learn how to give their opinion on certain topics. While others became inspired in making their own poetry or stories in the future with the influence of what they have read before.
