bowls

Edible Ecofriendliness
Like many oceans in the world, the beaches in Cape Town are littered with plastic food containers. Georgina de Kock was inspired to create a product that would eliminate all: Munch Bowls.

She came up with the idea when someone asked her to create something for them to hold curry and rice, and thought of alternatives. She wanted to save the world and give people good food at the same time, so she produced edible bowls. The food has no preservatives to stay organic but to maintain its freshness, de Kock uses rooibos. She got the idea after she watched a talk show discuss how rooibos can serve as a natural preservative. She tried and tasted it, and it works. Rooibos can last for 5 hours without getting soggy and according to de Kock, they can be microwaved.

The Munch Bowls have distinct flavors for sweet and savory food. Despite not being the only edible tableware, the company says they are in high demand. However, the company must overcome one hurdle for such innovation: price. “It is much more expensive than plastic. I think eventually it’ll become cheaper as we can produce more. We don’t have a problem with our export market. They realize the need for this product, and, you know, they are actually quite proud to be more green, ecofriendly,” de Kock says.
