One Ocean, One People
Wayfinders in Polynesia learned traditional navigation skills from their elders. They learn the names and movements of more than 200 stars from the “Star Compass” by memorizing all information and picturing them in their minds. However, these traditional navigation skills began to die out so a group of people from Hawaii built the Hokule’a in 1975.

Their plan was to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti using the canoe to demonstrate the importance of traditional navigation. A wayfinder named Mau Piailug was invited to Micronesia to take part in this project. The Hokule’a’s successful sailing led many people to rediscover the value of traditional navigation techniques.

Kanako sailed 13,000 kilometers on the Hokule’a from Hawaii to Japan. It was difficult for her, but she and her crew rose to the challenge under the slogan “One Ocean, One People.”
