The Unusual Architect
Ban Shigeru is an architect who became famous for using unusual materials.
On January 17, 1995, an earthquake was experienced in Hanshin area. Ban saw victims standing near their badly damaged church. So, he asked the priest if they can build a new church using paper tubes. The priest did not agree. He said that the victims’ housing is more important. But Ban did not give up and told him that the church would serve as the victims’ community center. The priest finally agreed, so they started building the church.
Ban wanted to be different from others who just wanted to work for rich people. He wanted to help the people who are affected by disasters. So, he started using paper tubes, which are strong and always available, to build disaster-relief structures, schools, and churches. Ban does not let anything stand in his way in helping people. In 2010, Haiti experienced an earthquake. The airport to Haiti was closed, so he flew to Dominican Republic and drove for six hours to Haiti. Then, he built paper-tube shelters for the victims.

Animals and the environment
Jane Goodall is a doctor who spent most of her life studying chimpanzees in Africa. In one of her interviews, she shared that there are a lot of things people can do to understand the animals. Two of the most important things to do is to watch and observe them.
It is common knowledge that chimpanzees and humans have a lot in common. Chimpanzees behaviors are very much alike with humans’. They are very close to their family and they care for one another. Meanwhile, male chimps are often protective of their territory, so they could be unfriendly to other chimps. But at the same time, they could also be friendly and helpful to others.
Jane Goodall has been traveling the world. She mentioned that everything in nature is connected. If one pattern is destroyed, everything could change. She hopes that the youth would know more about the environmental problems. So, she started a club for young people to help the animals and the environment. Goodall believes that everyone has their own responsibility in changing the world.

Immigration problem in the European Union
An immigration problem has been growing by leaps and bounds in the European Union. Every day, thousands of immigrants decide to hit the road to reach Europe but the problem is the lack of law and ideas on how they can safely be distributed among the member states of the European Union. The disagreement and division between the Western and Eastern European states about the opening and closing the borders have made the crisis worse because of their economic situation which is going downhill.
The crisis reached its peak in 2008 and became a great concern when many immigrants arrived because of a financial crisis in the USA. However, to think that immigration is a sudden invasion is a mistake because it is a characteristic of the European Union. In fact, the unsuccessful distribution of immigrants is one of the causes of the crisis. They thought opening the borders was a positive idea until it went out of hand because of the increasing number of the European Union’s members. Also, one of the causes of the increasing number of immigrants going to Europe is the civil war in Arab countries which put people’s lives in great danger. Some immigrants who were kept out of a country and others who were taken in both suffer because of poor living conditions. International law aims to protect the immigrants by giving the countries the ability to control their borders. However, they must accept the fact that their right to work and qualify for welfare benefits are limited. It is also a way for the European Union to protect their economic situation which could be affected by the rising number of immigrants.

PART B_2

Renewable energy
The effects of climate change have become worse over the past years. Because of that, many scientists have been making an effort to solve the problem before it gets out of hand.
In most discussions about climate change, it is agreed that renewable energy is one of the main keys to control the worsening effects of rising temperatures since it does not produce gas that causes global warming. Hydropower and wind are two examples of renewable energy.
Hydropower has been the world’s biggest source of renewable energy. One of its examples is dams. Some studies say that it is a clean energy source filled up by rain and snow. However, there are still some negative effects to the environment and its surrounding communities. It could damage river ecosystems and displace many residents.
Wind as a source of energy began 7,000 years ago. Nowadays, a lot of countries use wind energy as their main source of electricity. To change the wind’s energy to electricity, they build tall posts that have sails or blades which are called windmills. Meanwhile, this could be dangerous for birds and bats. In fact, it kills hundreds of thousands each year.
Still, engineers and scientists are looking for the best possible ways to improve renewable energy resources without being harmful to people and the environment.

Driving tips for beginners
Learning how to drive a car could be a very thrilling experience. It can be intimidating and overwhelming at first, but once you get to learn all the basics of driving, you will be more confident on the road even if there are other vehicles around you.
Some experienced drivers would say that driving a car uses muscle memory. It is also called procedural memory. It is a skill where people do not have to think about what they should do in a certain situation, they just perform it at the drop of a hat.
However, in order for people to develop muscle memory, they have to repeatedly do an action. So, in driving a car, people have to learn and practice the basics repeatedly which are very important for beginner drivers.
Here are some basic tips that a new driver must always remember. First, adjust the mirrors and seats. Make sure that the seat is comfortable for driving, not too far or too close to the pedals. The driver should also be able to clearly see the vehicles behind or beside them through the side and rearview mirrors. Second, do not step on the gas pedal too hard, just gradually press down on the gas pedal and slowly increase the speed. Third, always use signals when making a turn or changing lanes. This will save drivers from accidents. Fourth, always follow the speed limit, but do not go too slow. Lastly, focus on the pedal and steering wheel. Do not use mobile phones or any other electronic gadgets while driving as they might cause distraction. Remember that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Pam:
Hi, Sally. Our vacation is getting near. Do you have any plans for winter vacation?
Sally:
Hi, Pam. Yes, I want to go on a trip abroad. How about you?
Pam:
Me too, Sally. It’s been a year since we traveled to Vietnam. Where do you want to go on a trip?
Sally:
I want to go somewhere in Asia. Why don’t we go on a trip to South Korea? Have you ever been there?
Pam:
No, I haven’t. That’s a great idea. I heard there are more tourist spots in South Korea than in Vietnam. Let us start planning about our trip. When are we going to have the trip?
Sally:
Let’s have the trip on December 15 to 20. I will check if there’s a seat sale in Asian Life Airlines. I will let you know after a few minutes.
After a few minutes
Pam:
I am making an itinerary for our South Korea trip. Have you checked the seat sale in Asian Life Airlines?
Sally:
Yes, I have. We can get a 50 percent discount on our two-way tickets from Japan to South Korea. Shall I book our flight now?
Pam:
Sure. Anyway, I read that we can also go to South Korea by ferry.
Also, a ferry ticket is cheaper than an airline ticket.
Sally:
I see. But riding a ferry has a longer travel time than riding an airplane. Riding an airplane is also the most convenient way to travel. I think we can try riding the ferry to South Korea next time if we have more time.
Pam:
I agree. Also, we are going to ride a bus most of the time when we travel around South Korea. I’m so excited for our trip!
Sally:
Me too. I will buy a travel map so that we won’t get lost.
