PART B_2

In 1960, many countries suffered from a food shortage that killed at least 15 million people. Because of that, the government started a project, joined by scientists and ordinary farmers, which they called the Green Revolution.
The Green Revolution was their solution to worldwide starvation. It has three pillars; the new types of crops, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and irrigation. A few years later, the productivity of farming worldwide improved significantly. Although it was a huge success, it still created unexpected problems. Fertilizers are causing pollution in many countries and water supplies are running out. Water shortages have become a serious problem worldwide.
Food production will not be possible unless there is a sufficient supply of water. To solve this, they started the Blue Revolution. It practices efficient irrigation, realistic pricing, and water harvesting. Water harvesting stores rain and wastewater. Because of this, water has become a renewable source. Still, people should remember that water is essential to their survival. So, it is important to be responsible for water consumption. This way, food production will be secured especially in the coming years.

On May 27, 2016, President Barack Obama spoke to the people of Hiroshima, 71 years after America dropped the world’s first atomic bomb. In his speech, he talked about his hope for lasting peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
He acknowledged the suffering and death of thousands of innocent war victims. Today, many memorial sites around the world were built to remember the courage and heroism of people during the World War. He also mentioned that although science allows people to discover things to improve their lives, the same discoveries could also turn into killing machines. He said that people should look into the eye of history and change for the better to prevent future suffering caused by nuclear weapons.
Nowadays, there are still acts of terrorism and oppression around the world, so persistent efforts should be done to avoid major catastrophes. Barack Obama sees hope in the eyes of the children that in the future, Nagasaki and Hiroshima will be known as the start of the world’s moral awakening.

PART B_2

There are huge differences between the communication style used in American and Japanese companies which had been observed by a Japanese woman who experienced working for such companies.
In the U.S., people prefer to say four positive comments before giving one criticism. They believe that in this way, it would be easier for people to accept criticism since their efforts are still being acknowledged. So, they would not feel completely rejected.
Meanwhile, Japanese people would generally focus on pointing out weaknesses and would rarely mention strengths when giving feedback. This communication style was emotionally challenging for her, but she turned it into a motivation to work harder to achieve her goals.

She realized that these styles have their own advantages and disadvantages. She has also learned that each person reacts differently to these styles of communication. Some people feel motivated and upon hearing positive comments about their work, this also helps them gain more confidence. On the other hand, some people become overly confident when they often hear encouragement. It is really a matter of preference. So, she suggests that companies should adopt a style for each employee with consideration to their cultural differences to help them grow.

PART B_1

Now, we will read aloud the dialogue below. I will read the female student’s parts, and you will read the male student’s parts.

PART B_2

Female:
I totally forgot that I have guitar practice with the Music Club today, so I did not bring my guitar. Now, I don’t know what to do. I can’t miss today’s practice because we will be performing on our school program next week.
Male:
Why don’t you ask your mother to bring your guitar to school? You live 5 minutes away from our school, right? For sure she can bring it before your practice.
Female:
My mother can’t leave our house because she is looking after my two-year-old brother. She doesn’t have anyone to look after him. I don’t want to make her worry about my simple mistake.
Male:
I see. Then, why don’t you borrow a guitar from the Music Club? They might have a spare one.
Female:
Yes, they have. But someone might have already asked permission to borrow it.
Male:
You can still try. Anyway, I have to go now. I can’t be late for my tennis practice.
Female:
Thanks for your suggestions, Paul. Good luck on your tennis practice.
Male:
No problem! Thanks, too.

PART B_3

Now, please read the dialogue silently for 50 seconds.

PART B_12

Now, we’ll read the sample answer. Please repeat after me.

PART B_13

The female student and the male student have been talking about a problem the female student had. The problem was that she forgot that she had a guitar practice with the Music Club today, so she did not bring her guitar. She could not miss today’s practice because they would be performing on their school program next week. The male student had offered two suggestions to help her solve her problem. His first suggestion was to ask her mother to bring her guitar to school. His second suggestion was to borrow a guitar from the Music Club. I agree with the second solution because I think it is impossible for her mother to bring her guitar to school, although they live just 5 minutes away from their school. The Music Club had a spare guitar. If in case there was someone who would borrow it, she could just talk about their schedule so they could both use it.

PART B_2

Nowadays, most people do not believe in magic. We know for a fact that magic only happens by a trick. However, there are still some “miracles” that some people happen to believe.
In 1917, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright took photographs of which they claimed to be fairies. During that time, photography was still a new thing, so many people believed that it was true. However, years later, they admitted that it was fake and the fairies were just paper dolls. If something similar to this happens again, concluding that it must be a supernatural should never be an option as it might stop people from seeking the truth.
Meanwhile, science thrives to find answers to people’s questions by creating possible hypotheses and testing them until they unlock the truth. Learning about miracles, magic, and myths can be fun and exciting. But the truth is more magical because it is the reality. And science has its own magic because it finds its way to bring people to reality.
