PASSAGE READING

Please read aloud the following passage. I will check your pronunciation as you read.

READ

Saving Stray Animals

There are about 82,902 stray cats and dogs that are being put to sleep every year in Japan. This is to control their growing population. However, a doctor from Kumamoto City believes that putting these animals to sleep does not solve the real problem. Because of that, he started a project that aims to sterilize at least 2,000 stray cats and dogs per week. This method decreases the chance of female cats getting pregnant since they no longer feel the need to seek out mates. This also reduces their risk of getting diseases. He also mentioned that stray dogs and cats will get proper medical attention they need such as treating their wounds.

Sacco-Vanzetti Case

On April 25, 1920, a crime occurred in the town of South Braintree, Massachusetts where a paymaster and his guard was shot dead. The payroll they were carrying amounting to $15,776.51 was stolen. Two Italian immigrants named Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested for the crime. Anti-government booklets were found in their car when they were arrested. Also, they could not prove where they were on the day the crime was committed. There were witnesses that proved they were not guilty but the jury was not convinced because the witnesses were also immigrants. Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty on July 14, 1921.
